Saw this with the wife a week or two ago. I thought it looked retarded, but she really wanted to see it. I ended up loving it. Funniest shit I've seen in a LOOOOOONG time.
I have been one of those that used to say they are out of ideas too, but the more my entertainment career has me in touch with more talented people inside and outside of music....the more I find out Hollywood much like the music industry isn't out of ideas and talented people.....it's the structure and politics of maintaining power and influence and the money that goes with such......that are causing the problem. This is going to sound bitter, but I'm not, cause I've learned how to make money in the biz despite the toxic conditions! In music....you have a bunch of business people....making music decisions.....as if they know what really sounds good or is creative and interesting. So really good stuff that people should be hearing doesn't get out, cause the business folks don't understand or appreciate it.......while cookie cutter crap gets put out again and again, because something just like it already succeeded with that oh so discerning 12-16 year old demographic! If this was the structure 30-40 years ago....some of the best stuff ever recorded wouldn't have gotten through and some of the best artists that we've ever seen wouldn't even have gotten a deal. Not pretty enough, not marketable enough, or not competitive enough with something else that already exists, which is the stupidest of all.....as if that's the goal of music.....to defeat some other piece of music. It's ridiculous! Instead of being able to like things on their own merits....everything...including Art.....is thought of like sports.....and somebody has to win. It's silly really! It's so far gone....they promoted an advertising campaign for those Twilight disasters that had people rooting for or against characters in the same doggone movie, cause there isn't even a concept of good vs. evil......in a dang monster movie....just soap opera style drama....as our kids get sucked into making everything more emotionally driven and devoid of intellectual concepts and content. So.....you get the same old crap again and again....and the most interesting part is.......how utterly insane can we dress it up so it all seems interesting...how gaudy and ridiculous can we get! Meanwhile a plain chunky chick just makes some nice songs after an intense and emotional break-up and you get Adele. The kids responded like they had never heard anybody that can actually sing (cause they darn near hadn't) and the project goes through the roof!....and it's not even that brilliant....just better than most of what they have been slingin' at folks! So now......instead of realizing there is money to be made with good artists that can actually sing.....they are on the hunt for the next Adele.......!!! It's backward, but profitable! It's safer that way too, cause the consuming public often has no taste. Hollywood is the same way. The more writers and actors I meet....the more I find they talk about great scripts and projects that they want to do, but can't get a big producer or director attached and so the studios don't care. They need names to sell films....or they just trot out the same old dead horse ideas...and beat them some more! Why greenlight that risky new film that seems brilliant when you can remake a hit with current "stars" if they can even be called that?....bunch of talentless hacks in many cases, but I digress. It's not that there aren't any interesting ideas.....it's this capitalistic society that judges everything by monetary standards. If folks would stop buying the same crappy music again and again....often for their children that have no idea what good is, fearing they will hate them forever if they don't get whatever they want.....or going to see the stupid "blockbuster" film with nothing artistic in it....or playing the 7th installment of Metal Call of Gears of Warfare: Dance Revolution Pokemon Duty Black Ops Edition..............maybe they would put out something decent. As long as crap remains a cash cow......crap's what we're gonna get!
Everything is pretty much a remake. Even the first movies from the turn of the century were based on popular novels. Ask Red if you don't believe me...
