The Chargers expect Ryan Mathews to miss four-to-six weeks with a broken clavicle.

Ryan Mathews said Sunday says he thinks he can play in the Chargers' season opener.

On Monday, coach Norv Turner reminded reporters that, while he likes the optimism, Mathews has little say.

The veteran running back broke his clavicle and underwent surgery last week. The team gave a recovery timetable of four to six weeks.

A four-week return would put him back on the field just in time for the Chargers' Sept. 10 season opener in Oakland.

Mathews also said he's been told he can return in as few as three weeks.

“The last time I checked, Ryan is not a doctor,” Turner said. “We're going to just evaluate him on a weekly basis. If he heals fast and he's ready that early, that'd be great. What I've been told is four to six weeks in terms of him being able to get back out there. We'll just see how it goes.”

In the interim, the Chargers plan to go with a three-man committee, involving veterans Ronnie Brown, Le'Ron McClain and Curtis Brinkley.

Wonder if that clavicle is the same one the seat belt was on in the auto accident.

didn't think of that! what is the procedure when an NFL guy gets in a wreck and says he's fine? if there were no x-rays, he very well could have been hiding it

I don't get the Doctor Kevorkian "Doctor Death" references. The guy was a competent doctor who assisted terminally ill or disabled people in suicide. The Chargers doctor fucks patients up who have no interest in dying or getting injured and hasn't killed anyone yet that we are aware of.
