I know, personally, a group that went in this year: The Comets. The backing band for Bill Haley. I find it a bit odd that Bill Haley went in, yet his band never got in. Without that band, a pivotal group in the popularization of what was to become Rock 'N Roll, Haley would have been relegated to local County/Western status as a local performer in Chester, PA. The first several artists inducted deserved the honor. After that, it was no more than a popularity contest, like the Oscars or the Grammys. What separates the Rock 'N Roll Hall of Fame and the others is that it celebrates great contributions to the art form, whereas the others glorify, more often than not, the flavor of the day, with no thought as to what will stand the test of time. It is all about MONEY! Unfortunately, there are fewer, great artists emerging, year after year, than there are films or albums placed on the list for consideration of their respective honors. "American Idol" contestants stand a better chance of getting into the Rock 'N Roll Hall of Fame than most of the groups mentioned in this thread, in this day and age. The arts are not supposed to be competitive. I have been nominated for several awards and it pisses me off, including an album that was submitted for Grammy consideration, for which I played a large role. I am all about honoring the greats in all fields. I just think there HAS to be a better way to do it than rating someone's work OVER another's...
Other than the fact that I think Carrie Underwood might actually be deserving one day....I agree with all of this. Art isn't supposed to be competitive! That's why we have sports and games! I just wrote in the movies thread about that same thing before reading this....when I could have just copied and pasted much of this!
