as intense as he played, maybe he also had some early neurological disease processes starting. Maybe like Duerson and a couple others, he wanted his brain studied. There is a lot that isn't known about traumatic brain injuries, and while football players aren't "injured" so to say, who knows the cumalative effects of the hits the head/brain takes over a lifetime of playing football?

I can not condone selfishly taking your life. There are very few situations where I find it an appropriate action.

That said, think if you were known and introduced to family friends as a Pop Warner/PeeWee football stud. Then you are known as a blue chip high school athlete. Then people talk about you as one of the best linebackers in recent college history. Then you are a first round pick and the face of a franchise and a city and become a multiple ProBowl selection and voted to the All-Decade team. You are known and you identify yourself as a football player.

    And then, suddenly, you aren't.

    Who are you?
    What is your identity?
    Where is your self-worth?

I can understand how that can be very hard to overcome.

That's quite the story.., I think it probably reflects his unhappiness at the time and for the rest of his time here on earth unfortunately.
I just watched his moms' presser.....damn, that was hard to watch.
I just can't believe it....it's shocking..., it's looked like he was enjoying retirement from the outside.
He's a Chargers icon, always will be.
    RIP #55....SAY OW. :(

Scores of NFL players have come forward in the hours since Junior Seau died to share their memories of playing with or against Seau, and those memories serve as a stark reminder that Seau — no matter the personal demons that led him to commit suicide — was one of the most respected and beloved…[IMG]

Seau’s mother, Luisa Seau, sobbed in front of reporters as she cried loudly, “Junior! Why didn’t you tell me you were going?”

They're saying he shot himself in the chest and apparently it took awhile for him to bleed out.

Seems like a painful way to go.

I ran into Junior a few times over the last 20 years. The first few times were at autograph signings in the North County when I still lived in Carlsbad. Junior was in his second season with the Chargers and I had bought some of his Say Ow t-shirts. Junior didn't charge for his autographs and I still have those shirts now. I remember a local 7-11 in Carlsbad sold lightning bolt keychains machined from aluminum. I bought a few of these and gave one to Junior at the autograph signing. He thought it was cool, thanked me for it, and clipped it to his keyring. What I remember most about him was that he always took extra time to talk to kids who attended his autograph sessions. He would ask them their favorite teams and whether they played sports.

The last time I saw Junior was one evening several years ago when he was in his second season with the dolphins. Seau had been put on IR a few weeks earlier and had returned home to Oceanside. I was returning from Orange County one evening and stopped at the Oceanside library to return some books. I parked next to a new Mercedes E Class sedan. When I returned, I recognized Seau walking up the street from the O-side pier with two other guys. They were all holding Bibles. I remember Junior looked at my car (a 1993 Civic) and kind of furrowed his brows as I realized the Mercedes was his car!

As a friend of Junior Seau, Lorenzo Neal said that when he learned of Seau’s death today, his reaction was, “We lost a great man.” But as a player who had a lengthy career before recently retiring, Neal had another reaction to the news that Seau’s death was an apparent suicide: Neal understands the pressures…[IMG]
