NFL legend Junior Seau was found dead in his home in Oceanside, CA ... and cops are investigating a shooting ... multiple law enforcement sources tell TMZ.

Seau was 43-years-old ... and leaves behind 3 kids and an ex-wife.

Cops are currently at Seau's home -- located in San Diego County -- and were seen talking with a man who was inside the house and appeared distraught.

We're told Seau sent text messages to his ex-wife and 3 kids yesterday saying, "Love you." We're told they all responded and didn't suspect anything was wrong. We're told he last saw his kids 3 weeks
ago.

Sources close to Seau tell us family members didn't notice any signs of depression in recent weeks.

Seau was a beast in the NFL -- skyrocketing to fame thanks to his explosive play with the San Diego Chargers, Miami Dolphins and New England Patriots. The USC standout was selected in the first round of the NFL draft in 1990 and played in the league for 20 years.

Seau was involved in a car accident back in 2010 when he drove his SUV off a cliff in Carlsbad, CA hours after he was arrested for allegedly attacking his girlfriend. Seau later said he was not trying to kill himself ... insisting he had fallen asleep at the wheel.

TMZ.com, citing multiple law-enforcement sources, reports that former NFL linebacker Junior Seau has died in a shooting at his home. The passing of Seau has not been confirmed. Pro football great Junior Seau was found dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound by a housekeeper, according to a North County Times source.
Oceanside police responded to former NFL player Junior Seau's home on The Strand on Wednesday morning and there were unconfirmed reports that Seau may have been shot. The San Diego County medical examiner's office said an investigator was sent to the scene.
Named Tiana Baul "Junior" Seau when he was born in Jan. 19, 1969, Seau was drafted fifth overall by the San Diego Chargers in the 1990 draft.
At Oceanside High School, he lettered in football, basketball and track and field. He earned recognition as a league MVP and was named by Parade Magazine to its high school All-American Team.
After three years at the University of Southern California, he joined the NFL.
He was named to the Pro Bowl 12 times and made the league's list of All-Pro starts for 10 years.
Seau was recently quoted in a North County Times column on the "bounty" scandal involving the New Orleans Saints and its practice of offering cash incentives to players who doled out vicious hits on their opponents.
"It's sad that it was written into an incentive package to go into a game that we all love and turn it into it that,'' he said. "There is going to be a cloud over our game because of that. So there is a lot of pressure, obviously, on (NFL Commissioner Roger) Goodell and those in the NFL office to do something drastic, big, to send a message out there.
"This is a sport in which you inflict pain on your opponents, but it is not in the game to hurt them and have a bounty over a player. Then you have pushed it too far because you should never place a bounty on another human being.''

I don't know what to say or think about this. I don't understand why he would kill himself. He must have been in a dark place. Still, how bad could his life have sucked to do THIS? FUCK!

Very sad. Listening to New England sports radio when they broke the news and the moron actually took that as an opportunity to say his tackle numbers are inflated cuz he piled on at the end of plays.....Seriously? Even if you think that, is there not a better time to mention that? Poor taste.
