I don't call 17% of PR's receptions, 23% of the team's receiving yards and 1/3 of the team's TD catches a little offense. He might not be either of the Johnson's but Eric Weddle isn't Ed Reed or that crazy pineapple in Pittsburgh either. Plus Dwayne Bowe or Desean or whomever they want to pick up to try and replace VJ is gonna want a lot of money also. if they don't stay where they are.
Too my knowledge, the Chargers didn't even make an offer to Darren Sproles. I'm not blaming him for drafting him, I didn't even blame him for letting him go, just that he hasn't replaced him. But if your 4 year $14 million contract statement is correct, now I blame AJ for not re-signing him.
I understand your post, I just think letting VJ walk is a mistake, especially if there is a win now mandate from Dean.

I should have said once there was no doubt AJ got his hands back firmly on the controls. Meaning after Dean Spanos decided to keep AJ and not fire his anti-social, grouchy, crabby ass.

Here's a draft projection proving he was drafted right where he should have been just to back up my point:

    "Vincent Jackson WR/TE Northern Colorado 6’5 241

When you put up numbers like Jackson has, people take notice. Despite playing for D1-AA Northern Colorado, Jackson has been talked about since his awesome junior season. That year, he put up 66 catches for 1,462 yards and a school record 21 touchdowns. He was a unanimous selection for All American lists that year. It would seem difficult to put up numbers similar to that, but Jackson did just that as a senior. He hauled in 80 grabs for 1,382 yards and 11 touchdowns. He also spent time returning punts and kicks, with a career punt return average of 11.6 yards(with 2 touchdowns) and 23.8 yards per kick return. Jackson was also a wing forward on the basketball team, averaging 13.6 points, 5.6 rebounds, and 3.1 assists per game as a junior.

Jackson is an imposing figure as a receiver. He has great size, is strong, but is also a great athlete. He is a huge target for a quarterback to throw to, and he shows good hands grabbing the ball. He is also a threat downfield with his size and leaping ability. He should be a major red zone threat in the NFL. He also played on special teams in college, so he may bring value as a kick returner in the NFL.

Jackson appears to be a WR/TE tweener. Even though he had an awesome combine, he doesn’t play the way he tests out. He may not have the agility or the ability to come in and out of cuts at the next level. He may be a special receiver if moved to TE, but he would have to learn how to block. Playing at a lesser level means he hasn’t faced top competition and needs some refining in his overall skills.

Along with Matt Jones, Jackson may be the most intriguing player in the draft. Their measurables and natural athleticism are outstanding. Very few people have the type of athleticism that they do. But there is some doubt as to where they project at the next level. Jackson has a better shot at becoming a wide receiver in my opinion, but both players may end up at TE at the next level. Jackson solidified a day one grade with his awesome combine, but he could go anywhere from the late first round to the early third. It only takes one team to fall in love with his gifts, and I expect somebody to pull the trigger in the second round."

Sometimes I feel like we are the Padres of the NFL. The league's farm club: Develop big talent and ship it off to other teams so they can win Super Bowls.

Boltfan of Oz Sir Norval The Brave

Another thing the Chargers would miss big time if he walked....he is an awesome blocking WR! All the BS off field dedication stuff gets highlighted but this guy became a great receiver under the Chargers coaching staff. AJ will have to face the "why didn't you lock him up earlier?", but I can't see how letting him walk will sweep that super dumb shit under the rug. VJ is a top receiver who will get and deserves to get top money. This won't be a, "well, that was his worth the time we needed him" Weddle bullshit excuse either. NO ONE will say the Chargers overpaid. He's a Charger

Oz your eloquence is only exceeded by your aussieness. I completely forgot to mention how good of a blocker VJ is.

Totally agree, if you look at the perceived weaknesses on his predraft scouting and he worked on all of them and improved in all areas. Yes re-signing him is a lot of money, but apparently we have a lot to spend and it would be a first step in a series of mis-steps so far this offseason to show the fanbase that the team is serious about learning from its past failures. It also makes up for the ownership jerking him around the past two years, and wouldn't be overspending because as Oz pointed out, that is his current market value and his performance backs it up. Look at the other WR1 alternatives and all signs point right back to keeping our own guy.
