CORTLAND, N.Y. -- With the first cracks in team unity appearing in the New York Jets' locker room as wide receiver Chaz Schilens called Antonio Cromartie's comments about the team's receiving corps a slight, coach Rex Ryan responded with a clear statement about who was in charge.

"I'm going to say this right now, listen to me when I tell you this," Ryan said, "I'm aware of what was said. OK? I'm on top of it, I'm telling you that right now. I'm on top of it, and it will not be a problem. And that's all that I'm going to say about the whole thing."

Cromartie, who declared that he would rank himself as the team's No. 2 wide receiver on the depth chart, clearly chafed his teammates who make a living playing the position. Schilens said after practice that he hasn't addressed the "slight" with Cromartie in person, but he isn't going to let it go.

"We'll address it on the football field," said Schilens, the 6-foot-4 former Oakland Raiders receiver who signed with the Jets this offseason. "... I think it's a slight, I'm not going to lie. I just wouldn't say it, it's not something I would say but I'm not him I guess."

Cromartie, the Jets' No. 2 cornerback was asked Tuesday on "ESPN First Take" where he would place himself on the depth chart after coach Rex Ryan said Cromartie could be asked to play at wide receiver this season. He responded seriously that he was behind Santonio Holmes, which puts him in front of Schilens, Stephen Hill, Jeremy Kerley, Patrick Turner and a number of others.

On Wednesday, Cromartie shot quickly by reporters who wanted to speak with him, telling the team's PR staff that he would speak Thursday. In his wake, rookie Stephen Hill said he wasn't offended by Cromartie's declaration.

"I always feel like I'm the best receiver on the team," Hill, the team's second-round draft pick from Georgia Tech, said. "Of course Santonio is the veteran but as a wide receiver you always want to be the best and that's how I feel."

But as a rookie, Hill wasn't interested in calling out Cromartie.

"I'm just trying to be Stephen Hill and stay in my place," Hill said.

Schilens got into a little more detail about why he thought the comment was offensive.

"I think he thinks receiver is a little different than what it actually is," Schilens said. "He's unbelievably talented and he plays cornerback."

Schilens said Cromartie -- who has run one go route at the Jets' training camp this summer -- made the mistake of thinking playing wide receiver is easy, which is a common misconception.

"Everyone knows Cro is unbelievably athletically gifted, very fast, but I've played with a lot of receivers and playing receiver is more than about playing fast," Schilens said.

Schilens said he wasn't looking to try to get some reps at cornerback, but maybe he can help Cromartie understand that playing wide receiver isn't as simple as he may think.

"I kind of thought it was a joke but then I guess he said it," Schilens said. "It's my job to fix that situation."

Those will likely be the last public comments from players about the topic. Ryan, who admitted at the end of a fracturous 2011 season that he lost the Jets' locker room, said that he was handling it.

"You guys know what was said and back and forth," Ryan said. "Not playing it out through the media. We will handle this, I will handle this, I'm aware of it, we'll handle it."

He sure can't tackle, so maybe switching him to WR is a way of saving face.

He's not far off...their receivers suck! But so does Cromartie. I can see him now dropping a ball over the middle to avoid being hit......pussy.

He's better than either of our corners were last year. We better be able to produce a pass rush or else the weekly torchings will be of historic proportions this season. Jammer bouncing back is a long shot. Hoping Cason will be consistent is the definition of insanity. Gilchrist is the only ray of hope from my perspective.

there's no way he could win answering that question...and he may be right! Doesn't sound like he was slighting anyone...that's what makes it such a good slight!

I don't get how Cromartie's propensity for siring children has anything to do with his football talent and don't really understand why it comes up in discussions concerning his on-field exploits.

It's like people just like saying it to make themselves feel better about the fact that we have less talent.

That's some cold comfort if it's comfort at all!

I'd also prefer the freakishly athletic and talented guy with all the baby mamas to what we have!

This might come off kinda selfish, but his personal life issues just don't bother me.

If he wants to have 10 kids or more...it's just not that big a deal to me...coming from a family that has 6 kids.....that would have been 7 if my actual second oldest brother......my current second oldest brother's twin.....had survived infancy. (I'll see you one day big bruh!)

Couple that with the fact that unlike lots of folks making babies in the world.......Antonio actually makes enough money to take care of 15 children by my math.....at $8 mil a year...minus taxes and 10% for his agent....and you just get a non story.

If you were able to then remove the justice system deciding his kids need $3,500 a month....which is just nonsense based on the fact that my parents did it with less than that for all 6 of their kids.....on just a GM assembly line worker's pay and a prudential claims clerk's pay...which didn't total each month what he's paying for each child...and I guess you just get a different perspective.

If you then add in that the baby mamas pretty much all get along and want their kids to know their half siblings and even considered doing a reality show together.....which Cro turned down saying "they'd have to make up stuff to make it good TV".....then it becomes even less interesting of a story.

Now you know it's a non story if Clint Eastwood's wife has a reality show and Cro ain't even got enough real baby mama drama for one!!!

It all seems silly and extra to me......all the way back to hard knocks and him messing up his kids names.

I don't know anyone that comes from a large family whose parents never called them the wrong name or left out a name when listing. It's just not that big of a deal in large families.

To this day my father calls me by my brother's names looking right at me at times!...LOL!!!

Back in the day you better have answered too!!!.......get you head knocked off actin' like you didn't know he was talking to you....you just better answer and go change the channel on the TV and get him the cup of soda!......LOL!!!

    But I digress.........

If bringing up Cromartie's kids every time he is mentioned helps get a person over the fact that he is yet another talented athlete we drafted that is helping yet another team compete....then don't let me stop you.

    In fact.....I'll help!

    VJ drinks......Sproles stutters.....and I heard Turner eats tapioca pudding......yuk!!!
