Ugh..I can't watch stuff like this without feeling weak. This was before my time but it is not hard for me to draw comparisons to him and his career from Philip Rivers.

Good offenses and hot garbage defenses. Our defense the last few years are awesome compared to the crap Fouts' had trying to play Defense for him.

    Saxman New year, new hope...

Honestly, Fouts didn't have garbage Defenses in San Diego during the "Air Coryell" days. The "Bruise Brothers" more than average with some Pro Bowlers on that roster, if I recall correctly. The problem with those teams was simply that the Offense was TOO GOOD! The Defense would be on the field three quarters of the game because, in many cases, "Bombs Away" would simply score too quickly. They were too efficient. Then the Defense would go out onto the field again, exhausted.

The Ross-led Chargers had strong Defense and an Offense that wasn't flashy but it worked. That team was actually better balanced than "Air Coryell" or even the current team. The current Defense is actually FAR WORSE than the one Fouts shared the sidelines with.

Most people that criticize that Defense are just spouting out rhetoric that game analysts spewed out at the time, much like everybody STILL saying "the Chargers have one of the most talented rosters in the NFL". It is obvious that some people are not looking at this team for what it was and is now.

"Air Coryell" and the current roster had/have strengths but both teams needed to be tweaked to maximize the personnel they had/have. Ross' team was the most balanced of the three, with emphasis on Defense.
