Chargers give 300 season ticket fans the boot ..
Body: February 1, 2008
SAN DIEGO – More than 300 season ticket holders will get the boot for violations of the “Code of Conduct” announced in 2006, the San Diego Chargers said Friday afternoon.
The ticket holders will not be allowed to renew or purchase other season tickets, the team said, “in an effort to maintain a positive, fan-friendly atmosphere at games at Qualcomm Stadium.”
”Our fans overwhelmingly want us to take action against individuals who ruin the game experience by being disruptive and abusive,” said Jim Steeg, the team's chief operating officer, in a statement.
Most of the ticket holders had been ejected from games in 2006 or 2007 by San Diego police or stadium security. Some may be surprised at being removed from the rolls, but the Chargers say that season ticket holders who sell or give their tickets to others are still responsible for the behavior of the person sitting in the seat.
The Code of Conduct was announced in 2006. A key statement in the code says, “Fans who demonstrate inappropriate and disruptive behavior ... are subject to ejection and season ticket holders risk losing their season ticket accounts.”
The list of possible violations includes the following:
Excessive consumption of alcohol
Obscene, offensive or abusive language or actions
Fighting, or otherwise dangerous, abusive or profane behavior
Unruly or inconsiderate behavior
Indecent exposure or undressing
Wearing obscene or indecent clothing
Smoking, except in designated areas
Scalping or other improper resale of tickets
Interfering with security procedures
Interfering with the progress of the game, going onto the field or throwing any object onto the field or on the stadium premises.
Being booted from the roles of season ticket holders doesn't mean fans are exiled from games. According to the Chargers, the undesirables will only "no longer be allowed to purchase tickets from the team."
They could conceivably buy tickets from other season ticket holders.
